Tube Spongepalooza

The size and shape of this beautiful tube sponge is exaggerated by my ultra-wide angle lens.

I’ve been carrying a camera below the surface since my very first open-water certification dive. (I somehow convinced our instructor, Paula, that I could handle it and our required skills demonstration.)

Yellow Tube Sponges (Aplysina fistularis) are marine invertebrates that filter water through their body to feed, and expel the water through the “chimney”.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary protects about 2,900 square nautical miles, yet supports about 3 million annual visitors. Disease, heat stress, and human activity have taken their toll yet nearly 6,000 marine species call the coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass meadows home!

This would look great as a metalprint or acrylic print on a dibond backing (16×20” or so).
