Great Laurel
Great Laurel - or Rosebay Rhododendron - (Rhododendron maximum) is native to eastern North America, with a range from Nova Scotia to Georgia, concentrated in the Appalachians.
It thrives - and crowds out many other understory plants in shaded areas along stream banks and steep slopes.
Although I prefer seeing it bloom, it has a unique wintertime behavior in that its leaves will droop down and curl, limiting the surface area on which snow or ice could accumulate and risk damage to the branches from the heavy weight.
This blooming example was along the Deep Creek trail near Bryson City, NC in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
